After Multatuli Left
Synopsis
In 1860, Max Havelaar was written by the famous Dutch writer. Multatuli was first published “The book that killed colonialism”. In one and a half century after it was written, many scholars reflected on whether the book is a made-up story or a collection of facts. However, no one seems to have ever asked the question: what happened to the oppressed people of Lebak, which Multatuli stood up for? The documentary film After Multatuli Left tries to find out what has or has not changed since then by following the trail of Arjan Onderdenwijngaard’s video footage in 1987.

Yogi D. Sumule
After graduating from IT in 1997, Yogi was inspired to make films, both fiction and documentary about minorities in Indonesian society and culture. He then moved to Sydney, Australia, to learn about filmmaking at KvB College and North Sydney Institute. After returning to Indonesia in 2012, he has worked for several films, music videos, commercials, and documentaries in various roles. The film Setelah Multatuli Pergi (After Multatuli Left) is his first feature-length documentary as a director.
