Forum Film Dokumenter sees documentary as a practice that is open, evolving, and embedded within cultural and knowledge ecosystems.

Through its programs, FFD works across development, exhibition, education, and distribution by building collaboration among communities, institutions, and international networks. This approach supports wider access, strengthens practice, and contributes to the development of documentary ecosystems at national, regional, and international levels.

Since 2002, Forum Film Dokumenter has operated as a space where filmmakers, programmers, researchers, and audiences meet to exchange knowledge, develop practice, and expand how documentary is produced, presented, and accessed.

Our Journey

For more than two decades, Forum Film Dokumenter has grown through collaboration, exchange, and shared learning across documentary communities in Indonesia and beyond. Our programs create spaces where filmmakers, programmers, researchers, and the public come together to develop knowledge, strengthen practice, and expand access to documentary.

The first edition of Festival Film Dokumenter is being held. The festival is a public event dedicated to showcasing documentary films in Indonesia. It serves as a meeting point for filmmakers, audiences, and the diverse perspectives that continue to shape the progress of documentary filmmaking to this day.

2002

SchoolDoc was initiated as an effort to bring documentary films into education through film screenings, student involvement as community juries, and various film appreciation activities. This program marks the first step by Forum Film Dokumenter in fostering a culture of film screening, extending access to documentary films, and creating opportunities for regeneration in Indonesia’s documentary film ecosystem.

2004

A joint exchange program with Appalshop (United States) broadens Forum Film Dokumenter’s perspective on collective work, documentary production, and community management. This exchange is one of the key experiences that has shaped the organization’s approach to international collaboration, cross-cultural learning, and capacity building.

2005

Awareness of the importance of preserving documentary works led Forum Film Dokumenter to initiate efforts to digitize its film collection and document Indonesia’s documentary data. This step laid the foundation for archiving practices and database management, which later evolved into filmdokumenter.id platform.

2006

With the support from Jan Vrijman Fund–IDFA, Forum Film Dokumenter launched a series of masterclasses for Indonesian filmmakers whose works were selected as finalists in Festival Film Dokumenter. Featuring Peter Wintonick, Anand Patwardhan, and, the following year, Leonard Retel Helmrich, this program provided an opportunity to learn directly from world-renowned documentary practitioners and marked the organization’s growing focus on capacity building for filmmakers.

2007

Through residencies, workshops, and various international festivals, the festival gained insights that helped shape its curatorial approach. Festival Film Dokumenter began introducing program sections such as "Perspektif" and "Spektrum," expanding the public’s understanding of documentaries through diverse contexts, themes, and cinematic practices. This curatorial framework continues to evolve and remains an integral part of the festival to this day.

2007

A new generation is becoming actively involved in Forum Film Dokumenter. A number of SchoolDoc alumni and festival volunteers are assisting with various programs, marking a new generation that has emerged from the learning environment created by the organization.

2009

Forum Film Dokumenter organized a reflective forum, "How is Indonesian Documentary Film Doing?", which brought together various stakeholders in the film and documentary ecosystem. This gathering served as a shared space to identify the challenges, needs, and direction of Indonesian documentary film, which subsequently laid the groundwork for various initiatives in the following years.

2010

For its 10th edition, Festival Film Dokumenter expanded its programming through seminars, exhibitions, and interdisciplinary collaborations with Jogja Biennale, EngageMedia, KUNCI Study Forum & Collective, Indonesian Visual Art Archive (IVAA), and Forum Lenteng. The festival has evolved into a melting point for documentary film and artistic practice, research, and culture.

2011

Through Masterclass with Enrique Sánchez Lansch, Forum Film Dokumenter explored the relationship between documentary and music as part of cinematic practice. The discussions, project consultations, and curatorial programs accompanying this event introduced new artistic approaches to Indonesian documentary filmmakers.

2012

Forum Film Dokumenter initiated "Let's Screen Docs," a screening program that brings documentaries beyond the festival space. In collaboration with various art collectives and cultural spaces, the program presents documentaries as a medium for sparking public conversations on a variety of social issues. This initiative later evolved into the foundation for Thematic Screenings program, which continues to this day.

2013

Festival Film Dokumenter began exploring the possibilities of documentary works beyond traditional film through an interactive documentary presentation developed by Edwin and Thomas Østbye, "17,000 Islands." This served as a catalyst for other initiatives related to documentary presentation as an evolving practice that extends beyond the screen.

2013

The festival introduced its Retrospective program for the first time through screenings of Abraham Ravett and Agnès Varda's works. This initiative expands the curatorial approach of the festival by inviting audiences to reflect on how documentary film has evolved through the practices, ideas, and artistic journeys of influential auteurs in documentary cinema history.

2014

Collaborations with various international festivals and institutions continued to grow through programming exchanges and curatorial collaborations with DMZ Docs, Thai Film Archive, and JAFF. In the same year, Docs in Progress held project consultation sessions with international mentors, complemented by public discussions with BritDocs Good Pitch, expanding opportunities for Indonesian filmmakers to develop their projects within regional and international networks.

2015

For the first time, Festival Film Dokumenter is launching its International Competition. This initiative was born out of a belief that Indonesian documentaries have gained a stronger standing in the global documentary discourse, and it also aims to bring Indonesian documentary practices closer to diverse cinematic approaches from around the world.

2016

Forum Film Dokumenter expands the learning space for documentary film through the initiation of Film Criticism Workshop, which stem from an awareness of the importance of sustainable film appreciation and criticism within the ecosystem. In the same year, a collaboration with the National Film Board of Canada, British Council Indonesia, and Institut Français d’Indonésie opened up new avenues for international exchange through various international documentary film programs.

2017

Forum Film Dokumenter began partnering with ASIADOC and DocMonde Asia to host a documentary project development program for Southeast Asian filmmakers. This collaboration expands Forum Film Dokumenter’s involvement in supporting the development of regional documentary projects through mentoring, consultation, and knowledge exchange.

2018

The Feelings of Reality marks Forum Film Dokumenter's exploration in interactive documentary formats through virtual reality (VR). Addressing disability rights, this program integrates research, production, and exhibition to develop new ways of experiencing and narrating reality through documentary.

2019

Amid restrictions due to COVID-19 pandemic, Forum Film Dokumenter shifted the festival and other activities to a digital platform until the following year. This change has opened up new ways for documentaries to reach audiences while also creating new possibilities for exhibition practices beyond physical spaces.

2020

In collaboration with Padepokan Seni Bagong Kussudiardja, Forum Film Dokumenter is co-organizing Ramu Layar, an intensive study program on film programming and exhibition practices. This collaboration expands the organization’s focus on capacity building for film programmers as a vital part of the documentary ecosystem.

2021

As pandemic restrictions began to ease, Forum Film Dokumenter decided to hold an in-person festival. This move was made in an effort to bring some festivity into today's rather gloomy situation.

2021

Festival Film Dokumenter is back in full in-person format. With the reopening of Gedung ex Bioskop Permata, the festival seeks to create an alternative screening space—a much-needed addition to the currently limited options. Gedung ex Bioskop Permata, a long-neglected cultural heritage site, became the festival's main venue. Although this initiative was well-received by the public, its use as the festival venue lasted only until the following year due to a lack of political will from the government.

2022

Forum Film Dokumenter initiated DOC Forum as a space to bring together Indonesia's documentary network, connecting communities, organizations, and film networks across the country. This endeavour has strengthened learning exchanges among practitioners and serves as a shared space to understand the challenges and future direction of Indonesia's documentary ecosystem.

2022

The launch of filmdokumenter.id marks the expansion and progress of Forum Film Dokumenter's archiving practices—which began in 2006—into a database platform for Indonesian documentaries. This platform expands access to information, education, research, and the distribution of documentaries through film management that connects filmmakers with a wide range of users.

2023

Forum Film Dokumenter initiated IDOCLAB (Indonesia Documentary Lab), a project mentoring lab supporting Indonesian filmmakers in developing their research, storytelling, and documentary production strategies. This program reinforces the organization’s commitment to nurturing a new generation of Indonesian documentary filmmakers.

2023

Forum Film Dokumenter launched Teka-teki Sinema, a film programming workshop for Southeast Asian film programmers, developed in collaboration with various regional partners. This program expands the organization's focus on curatorial and exhibition practices as an integral part of the documentary ecosystem.

2025

Festival Film Dokumenter introduces two new programs, DOC Performance and DOC Chat, as part of ongoing efforts to present documentaries within various media and formats. These programs were developed in response to the growing diversity of documentary practices beyond the screen.
