Synopsis
Director Stacii Samidin follows brothers Tyler and Sebastian Koudijzer as they continue their research into their family history. Previously, in 2023, they travelled with their grandparents to Mariënburg in Suriname, where their grandfather, Iksan, worked on the sugar plantations and raised a family of 3 children with grandmother Watinie. They follow the trail in Suriname where their Javanese great-grandparents were displaced from their homeland of Java under false pretences to work as contract labourers. Drawing on the memories of direct descendants of contract labourers, the brothers reveal a little-known chapter of colonial history.

By bringing together different materials and media, Sebastian interweaves pieces of dislocated history, characterized by an imbalance of power, with the present. His work therefore begins with a lens-based approach, drawing on archives and his own photography. Based on this research, he creates theater together with his brother, Tyler.

Fagus ‘Dagger DX’ Pattimahu
Living in The Netherlands and being from a different cultural background (Javanese and Moluccan) always inspires Fagus to research the multi-faceted relation between himself, or us as a people, to others and our surroundings. Fagus believes in the Alifuru (indigenous Moluccan) principal of Heka Leka, which is rooted in the everlasting and cyclical dynamics of duality and its transitions. It translates in how he approaches and works with sound and materials, and also in how he approaches traditional values in a modern era.
