Short films need the right distribution strategy in order to sustain their longevity. However, the challenge of distributing short documentary films in Indonesia is not without hurdles. Filmmakers often have to take on the dual role of producers and distributors who distribute their films independently. As one of the distribution pathways, film festivals serve as a storefront, an appreciation channel, and a hub for interaction with the audience and the industry. At the same time, festivals are also limited in their momentum and exclusive nature. This then encourages filmmakers to be strategic in utilizing other routes such as accessible digital platforms. However, it takes a skillful strategy to emerge amidst the sharp competition of other digital content. In addition to this, there’s still the challenge of designing a film with a narrative that remains relevant across time. So, what kind of a proper distribution strategy to use to cut through the dense haze hindering the distribution path of our short documentary films?
