A Form of Intergenerational Dialogues
From Island to Island (Kek-Huat Lau, 2024) enforces the construction of collective memory by combining family letters, diaries, and archival footage to create a transgenerational dialogue. This process not only connects the past with the present, but also shows how global and local, national and transnational contexts interact. Feature-length documentaries are not only defined by duration, but also how the time span functions as a “dose” in storytelling. For the filmmaker, duration serves as a space to develop a seemingly infinite story that allows for in-depth and layered presentation. It is then combined with editing that is present not only to fill the role of aesthetic development, but also as a narrative building element, rhythm setter, and tension builder.
