Long before corporations came up with meta-universes, humans created their own catharsis. An ideal world in which we choose to live in. Roleplay (Daffa Aqilla Hanif, 2024) is an innocent and honest film about those who invent their world.
Senbi and Nova, students from a high school in Purbalingga, found themselves on social media accounts roleplaying the celebrities they portrayed. A quiet year during the pandemic made Senbi feel that roleplaying was an attractive option. This stemmed from his close relationship with K-Pop. Deciding to “become” one of the Korean celebrities, he built a relationship and fell in love as quickly as the distance between a gadget and a finger. Who would have thought that a Korean celebrity could organize a wedding and be the organizer?

The world of roleplaying offers novelty and challenges the limits of improbability. No doubt, it instantly becomes a new alternative life. Senbi slowly neglected his schoolwork in the real world. The distinction between reality and fantasy is increasingly blurred. Roleplaying behaviors performed in cyberspace define and do not define life in the real world—these two traits go hand in hand.
This new world opens up new roles and knowledge for Senbi, Nova, and the other roleplayers—about affection, sexuality, and love stories on the other side. Enter Senbi and Nova’s meta-universe in Roleplay (2024) competing in the Student Competition program FFD 2024. (Athallah, Tuffahati) (Ed. Vanis/Trans. Naufal Shabri)
