Radiance (2024): Light in a Pausing World

— Film Review
FFD 2024

“Everything that happened up until now is inside me, everything is inside my body,” says the kid of Radiance (2023, Shuhei Hatano) director. Sip the wind, devour the afternoon sun–Director Shuhei Hatano attempts to capture the spring pandemic of 2020 to 2021 around his home in Japan through his camera as his eyes. We might agree: the world stops for a moment during a pandemic. Perhaps that’s what led him to continue recording the simple days he spent. In the form of a letter to his dear friends far away, a montage of images and videos flowed:

How are you? Are we still friends? Will we ever be friends?

Refusing to give up in the loneliness of the pandemic, Director Shuhei Hatano captures the news that stopped broadcasting so that it can be recreated, freezing the memories of those who have long been left behind. An evening stroll. Meeting a snail. Cycling. Shopping with his kid. Wife’s labour. The colours of a blooming flower. A long recording that forgot to be turned off. A line of light that runs through the leaves. Director Shuhei Hatano invites the audience to listen, see, and pay attention: for us to take heart in the small things we often overlook and forget. Come celebrate with Shuhei Hatano’s cheerful and humble days in Docs Docs: Short! at Festival Film Dokumenter 2024. (Athallah, Tuffahati) (Ed/Trans. Vanis)
