Sinopsis
Set against the ongoing resistance against Dutch aggression throughout Indonesia, this film depicts the people of Seberaya and Kabanjahe in Karo, North Sumatra, who fought to defend Indonesia’s independence. With a variety of landscape shots portraying the civic spirit, the film tells the story of Rusli, a wounded fighter who must be nursed back to health in a village. During his recovery, Rusli is taken care of by Tipi, Tuah’s younger sister, his comrade-in-arms.
As Rusli recovers, love blossoms between the two, until Rusli’s whereabouts are discovered by Dutch troops. A confrontation between Dutch and Indonesian forces becomes inevitable. The battle to defend Indonesia’s independence is simultaneously a battle to defend the village from the Dutch forces. At once, it becomes a personal struggle, coloring the setting of the villagers’ and soldiers’ struggle to defend their independence.

Bachtiar Siagian
Bachtiar Siagian (19 Februari 1923–19 Maret 2002) lahir di Binjai, Sumatra Utara, adalah sutradara, penulis skenario film, dan naskah drama. Sebelum memasuki dunia film, Bachtiar aktif di teater. Beberapa naskah yang ia tulis untuk teater di antaranya adalah Rosanti, Lorong Belakang, dan Batu Merah Lembah Merapi. Bachtiar banyak belajar secara otodidak dengan membaca tulisan-tulisan sutradara Rusia Vsevolod Pudovkin (1893–1953). Beberapa filmnya, Kabut Desember (1955), Daerah Hilang (1956), Turang (1957), Piso Surit (1960), dan Violetta (1962) banyak memberikan gambaran pada situasi dan psikologis masyarakat Indonesia. Filmnya, Daerah Hilang, mengalami sensor pada masanya.
Pada 1960, Bachtiar memenangkan penghargaan sebagai Sutradara Terbaik Pekan Apresiasi Film Nasional—sekarang FFI (Festival Film Indonesia)—untuk film Turang. Film tersebut diputar di Festival Film Asia Afrika (The Afro-Asian Film Festival [AAFF]) di Taschen, Uzbekistan pada 1958. Bachitar menjadi ketua LFI (Lembaga Film Indonesia) bentukan organisasi sayap Partai Komunis Indonesia, Lekra (Lembaga Kebudayaan Rakyat) pada 1959. Bersama Lekra, Bachtiar mendorong pembubaran AMPAI (American Motion Picture Association of Indonesia) atas monopoli film-film Amerika di Indonesia pada masa itu.
