Program Notes
About three decades after the birth of the Dada movement, World War II broke out. Amid the renewed turmoil of war, new forms of artistic exploration emerged. Though different in form, they still carried the same ideas. One such movement emerged from a group of literature students who met at Columbia University and came to be known as the Beats. Alcohol, opium, unconventional sexual practices, drugs, wild jazz music, and above all, freedom were the core ideas they consistently championed. Although they were anti-establishment and tended to reject academic norms, the Beats were, in fact, a group of well-educated students.
