Breaking the Cycle

Synopsis
Breaking the Cycle captures the political awakening among Thais after the rise and fall of Thanathorn, a young politician who calls to end the cycle of coups d’etat. The film explores the 2019 election in Thailand, which marked the end of five years of full military rule and a new group of young politicians who campaign against an authoritarian constitution, sparking hope and a once-in-a- generation youth movement.

Aekaphong Saransate
Saransate’s debut short documentary The Sea Recalls (2018) won the Best Short Documentary at the 11th DMZ International Film Festival, competed at the SGIFF 2018, and screened at various other festivals worldwide.

Thanakrit Duangmaneeporn
Duangmaneeporn is a cinematographer and a director based in Thailand. His directed shorts include Everybody’s Fine (2017) and Ghost of Phukang (2021) which was in competition at SGIFF 2021.

Komtouch Napattaloong
Thai artist filmmaker Komtouch Dew Napattaloong’s latest video piece, No Exorcism Film (2024) competed at CPH:DOX 2024 for the NEW:VISION award. His debut feature documentary, Hours of Ours (2023), premiered at the Visions du Réel 2023 International Competition and SGIFF 2023. Napattaloong also produced Nontawat Numbenchapol’s 2019 Thai doc, Soul Without Land (2019), which premiered at Visions du Réel Film Festival and later received the Special Jury Prize at the Taiwan International Documentary Festival.

Tanwarat Sombatwattana
Sombatwattana is a producer and filmmaker based in Bangkok, Thailand. She has also worked as a researcher and project coordinator for projects and initiatives at Purin Pictures, Pop Pictures, and Electric Eel Films.
