The importance of remembrance is the key talking point of Yang Kelak Akan Retak (Dito Yuwono, 2023) as we visually revisit certain remnants of war scattered around Java. The focus of this documentary is on the historical period surrounding Operation Kraai in 1948, or as better known by Indonesians as The Second Dutch Military Aggression post-independence.
Through the film, we take a tour of a number of monuments and landmarks. It is insightfully informative, providing all the important, large-scale international contexts of the time, whilst narrations from figures close to these monuments provide an intimate inside look into the more localized hues of what war truly meant. Director Dito Yuwono is also creative in his implementation, further adding color to his storytelling through the incorporation of multimedia elements. This usage of modern-day media such as Google in presenting these monuments contrasts the historical narrations heard through the crackling of radio static, akin to that of radio transmissions during wartime.
The contrast and the theme of the distortion of time in the documentary is important, as the title The Cracks That Comes After notes. Despite the strength and shades of war they represent, these monuments and landmarks are physically cracking, and fading as time goes by. Efforts must be done to preserve the memory of not only the war, but those who lived and fought through it. A crack in these important pieces of history represent the cracks in our memory as we age further from what was a monumental period in Indonesian history.
Go back in time through visiting Tugu Renville, Monument Renville and Jalur Status Quo, monuments unrivaled in their historical significance of the moments of war, in Yang Kelak akan Retak (2023). The film is selected for Spektrum Festival Film Dokumenter 2023. (Aradi Ghalizha) (Vanis/Adinta)
