Three Parts of Life (2024): Waking up After the Party

— Film Review
FFD 2024

The journey of Samirah’s big family was buzzing with excitement, at first. The atmosphere was alive. Slowly, the living room and the pictures faded, creating an emptiness.

Director Bagaskara Dwitya Bima Aksara divided the Three Parts of Life (2024) into three acts. Similar to the human phase of life, it presents a happy day, recognition of loss, and solitude. Starting from the Christmas celebration, marriage, and converting to another religion, to the funeral of a beloved husband. It is Samirah’s life.

Samirah’s life is a collection of choices, embodied in long prayers. The faces, exposed in the aged photographs, black and white, and a wordlessness video record the silence clearly. The montages collected in the Three Parts of Life (2024) are an inescapable thread of loneliness. Just like waking up alone after a party, Samirah collects her remaining strength to clean herself up and get ready to meet the harsh realities of life. (Athallah, Tuffahati) (Ed. Vanis/Trans.
