Spinning Yarn (2022): Spinning Homeworkers’ Dream

— Film Review
FFD 2022

When you see the fabric around you, do you ever think of any actors who contributed in the process of making it? If your answer is yes, then this documentary film is meant for you. This 8-minute 49-second short film explores the world of yarn crafts through the introduction of yarn spinners from four different backgrounds.

Meet Warsini, a middle-aged woman who is tempted by the flexibility of spinning the yarn while doing housework, and Sukiyah, an old woman who fills her days with spinning the yarn, Saeful Yulianto, the third generation who is running the family’s textile fabrics business, and Chelin Aurelia, a kid that enlivens the documentary in which she helps her mother to spin the yarn. The four individuals are telling about their hope as spinners by their own experiences and perspectives. It is captured that they are aware of the future spinner and they are afraid that no one wants to be a spinner in the future. This landscape is quite heartbreaking given that the demand of woven production is rising in particular from foreign market. It seems that the international market is giving more appreciation than the local one.

This documentary film by Afifah Putri Hidayah binds the four individuals with the same goal: sustainability. The representation of Chelin Aurelia symbolizes a piece of hope in the future of the spinning industry. For them, spinning yarn is a part of their daily lives, not just an occupation. Therefore, through this documentary, the audience can learn to appreciate the small things more, like how  the spinners cherish the things that are significant in their life.
