Through the Spektrum program, Festival Film Dokumenter invites us to experience the cinema as a teleportation and transportation. The program takes us on a voyage of discovery while simultaneously experiencing the cinematic delights offered by the selected films. The teleportation in question does not only throw us into the world of nowhere, but also knocks us back to the world we once-or had-experienced. Loneliness (Lai Chun, 2023) takes us to that other world.
Through the single-shot and still frame format, Loneliness (2023) deftly takes us to revisit the feelings of loneliness, despair, and hope during the last pandemic. Loneliness (2023) does not offer much décor, but rather the silent and bears witness to the human interactions within. Throughout the 27 minutes duration, we are invited to observe and recall how despair and hope become close relatives when hard times overwhelm us all. Dialogue between characters naturally flows as it should during Loneliness (2023), exchanging views on life to discussing routine as an important activity in maintaining sanity during the endemic so that the familiar space can also feel heartbreaking.
The black-and-white tones, the quiet atmosphere, the fading images and the change of weather from day to night are the right tools captured by Lai Chun to transport the audience to another space. Spaces that throw us into a state of befriending loneliness. Watch and ride Loneliness (2023) as a vehicle to transport–and revisit–you into another world.
