Fantasmagoría (2022): The Story Inherent in Old Iron

— Film Review
FFD 2022

Caliche is one of the explosives that can be found in Atacama, Chile. The caliche mining in Fantasmagoría was the main caliche mine in the year when the first world war occurred. This mine was one of the caliche suppliers to Germany at that time. On the other hand, caliche is also very dangerous for mine workers.

Through Fantasmagoría (2020), we will be invited to look at the caliche mine, Maria Elena, located in Chile. Maria Elena, long abandoned and out of operation, has become a place for a small community to live. The camera’s portrayal as the eyes of the deceased nitrate mine workers tells the story of how the laborers live. Using voice over methods, we will feel how to breathe the air  that is contaminated with nitrate dust, worsening eyesight, and some work accidents of mine workers where the company does not protect.

The experimental style of Fantasmagoría (2020) will invite us to explore the mining area, reflecting on the stories that evaporate through the inanimate objects there. Relive the abandoned feelings through ghosts who tell stories about life.
