A Wander into the Ocean (2022): Take A Deep Breath and Close Your Eyes

— Film Review
FFD 2023

Exploration of the relationship between humans and the universe is a powerful break to then observe reality as it should be. The waves, islands, and sea breeze in A Wander into the Ocean (Toma Zidić, 2022) serves as an invitation for us to question our relationship with nature. Zidić is trying to convey through a series of beautiful landscapes that we, humans, need to pause for a moment to catch our breath in the midst of the hustle and flickering pace of modernity.

During its 77 minutes duration, the film repeatedly questions the characters’ opinions on their complex relationships and perspectives on their surroundings. Set in a Portuguese archipelago, amidst the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, A Wander into the Ocean (2022) gradually deepens the audience’s perspective from the dialogues the characters form regarding creativity to the existential concepts that persistently plague our minds.

The universe is not seen as something passive, but as a living and reciprocal thing, something that can react to our actions upon it. This film is particularly interesting due to the fact that the perspectives offered on our relationship with the universe do not necessarily stand alone. A Wander into the Ocean (2022) can be seen as a holistic effort to reflect on and win back the universe’s trust in us as humans.

Zidić artfully invites the audience to take control of their consciousness and to reflect on human nature, which is dependent on the natural surroundings. Let’s meditate for a moment with A Wander into the Ocean (2022)! The film is selected in Utopia/Dystopia Festival Film Dokumenter 2023. (bonivasios dwi) (Vanis)
