The Short Documentary Competition of FFD 2019 has come to its end. The ruling was conducted on Monday, December 2nd, 2019. The three jury members were Jesse Cumming (film curator, Associate Programmer of Toronto International Film Festival’s Wavelength program), Tony Trimarsano (Indonesian documentary film director), and Wisnu Prasetya Utomo (media researcher of Communication Studies of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Universitas Gadjah Mada).

Eight films made it to the final phase of the competition: Cipto Rupo (Catur Panggih Raharjo, 2019), A Daughter’s Memory (Kartika Pratiwi, 2018), Diary of Cattle (Lidia A & David D), Sujud (Pahlawan Bimantara, 2019), Perempuan Tana Humba (Lasja F. Susatyo, 2019), Irama Betawi (Ibrahim Hanif, 2019), Luar Biasa (Erika Dyah Muftiarini, 2018), and More Than Work (Luviana Ariyanti, 2019).

“The finalists were all quite different in terms of their forms, scales, and scopes. Some were intimate and focused, the others were very broad. Progressive issues were discussed, such as LGBT rights, women’s rights, and environmental issues,” claimed Jesse Cumming. He added that he was quite optimistic that the youth participants have a bright future ahead of them in the upcoming documentary scenes, including the next installments of FFD.

The judging began with the screening of the eight films attended by the jury members at Sonobudoyo Cinema from 12 p.m. to 3.45 p.m. The discussion was held shortly after in Kafe Tujuan, Tirtodipuran from 4.30 p.m .to 5.45 p.m.

The discussion made sure that the winner was chosen not merely based on scores on evaluation rubric sheets. Instead, it was designed so that the juries could come to a mutual conclusion to choose the winner of Short Documentary Competition of FFD 2019. The winner will be announced on the Closing Night on December 7th, 2019.
