Have we ever realized that it is not only humans who have the right to living space? This reflection triggers the narrative brought in the film A Tale of The Crocodile’s Twin (2022) by director Taufiqurrahman Kifu. When humans are increasingly spilling over every year, we must keep sharing our breath in an increasingly crowded living space. Throughout the film, we are invited to board a small boat from one area to another in Central Sulawesi. It is true that the living space where the camera lens focuses on is the river and its surrounding. This documentary shows that the people of Kaili have to live together and share space with the crocodiles.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The people of Kaili hold three life principles so that the bond of harmony is maintained. The first is the relationship between humans and God. Second, the relationship between humans and other humans. Lastly, the relationship between humans and nature. The filmmaker not only records testimonies and stories from the locals about their daily life side by side with these ferocious animals, but it also brings to life the fairy tale narrative between Lasa Kumbili, a nobleman who is said to have a twin named Yale Bonto, a crocodile. Some people believe that the people they know also have crocodile twins.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I have schoolmates in Makassar who are also crocodile twins. In the past, when it was elementary school and time for physical education, we took off our clothes and just wore pants. When he took his shirt off, there were scales of the crocodile on his back. “<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the tales of Lasa Kumbili and Yale Bonto, the filmmaker also mentions La Goroba, a crocodile that swallowed a sand miner and his cart in 1935. This fateful story invites us to know John Fischer and his descendants. They are not allowed to play in the river after shooting La Goroba with a golden bullet because La Goroba is believed to be seeking revenge.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vulnerable is the right word. Maybe there are people who the crocodiles have injured. However, in this documentary, we are invited to hear the testimonies of those who have been saved. This 18-minute documentary can be an option for you to watch at this year’s Festival Film Dokumenter.<\/span><\/p>\n
