FFD takes place in alternative spaces with the aim of reaching a wider and more diverse audience. <strong>The upcoming 25th edition of FFD will be held on November 20\u201327, 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before reading this document, we recommend that you read the <a href=\"https:\/\/ffd.or.id\/download\/FFD%202026%20Film%20Submission-Rules%20and%20Regulation.pdf\"><strong>Rules and Regulations for Film Submission Festival Film Dokumenter 2026<\/strong><\/a> for general information on related topics. Please note the following terms for reference: (a) FFD, Festival, Forum, refers to the festival organizer; (b) Applicant, refers to the individual submitting the film; (c) Film(s), refers to the submitted audiovisual work; (d) Third Party, refers to parties outside of the Applicant and the Festival; (e) Program, refers to the Festival\u2019s activities related to the screening of Films.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Pendaftaran Film<\/h2>\n<h3>When are the submission deadlines and what are the fees?<\/h3>\n<p>The following are the submission deadlines for FFD 2026. All submissions are handled identically, regardless of which deadline you choose. We encourage you to submit your Film as soon as possible to get a lower submission fee. All deadlines apply equally, regardless of the country of production and the Program you are submitting to. You are welcome to create an account and complete all submission requirements at the link.<\/p>\n<h3>What are the submission categories?<\/h3>\n<p>FFD accepts Films released between 2024\u20132026, depending on the eligibility criteria for each Program. In general, FFD accepts submissions for Competition and Noncompetition Programs. You can submit your Film to the Program that meets the eligibility criteria. The following is an overview of the Programs for your consideration when submitting your film:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>International Feature-Length Competition<br \/>\n<\/strong>International Feature-Length Competition represents the Festival\u2019s commitment to global documentary practices. For more than two decades, this Program has presented films with diverse perspectives, distinctive narratives, and bold cinematic approaches.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Film must be completed between 2024\u20132026<\/li>\n<li>Running time above 40 minutes<\/li>\n<li>Films submitted in this category must be produced by a producer and\/or director who is not an Indonesian citizen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Indonesia Feature-Length Competition<br \/>\n<\/strong>Indonesia Feature-Length Competition reflects the Festival\u2019s commitment to supporting and celebrating the development of Indonesian documentary filmmaking. The Festival consistently presents Indonesian documentary works that offer diverse perspectives, fresh approaches, bold storytelling and narratives that engage with socio-cultural contexts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Film must be completed between 2024\u20132026<\/li>\n<li>Running time above 40 minutes<\/li>\n<li>Films submitted in this category must be produced or co-produced by a producer and\/or director who is an Indonesian citizen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Short Competition<br \/>\n<\/strong>The rapid global development of short documentaries as a dynamic medium opens limitless possibilities for exploration. Short Competition celebrates the strength of short-form documentary in delivering ideas concisely with a strong artistic vision and bold approach.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Film must be completed between 2025\u20132026<\/li>\n<li>Running time up to 40 minutes<\/li>\n<li>No restrictions on country of production or filmmaker nationality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Student Competition<br \/>\n<\/strong>FFD aims to provide a platform for emerging filmmakers to observe, comprehend, and define the issues that affect their communities. This category is dedicated for Indonesian student filmmakers with an explorative and bold spirit in addressing current issues through documentary filmmaking.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Film must be completed between 2024\u20132026<\/li>\n<li>No duration restriction<\/li>\n<li>Films must be directed by an Indonesian high school or university student filmmaker<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Noncompetition<br \/>\n<\/strong>This Program is designed to explore developments in documentary language, themes, approaches, and technologies. Films submitted must be completed between 2024\u20132026. The Program has no restrictions on the country of production, filmmaker nationality, or running time. FFD reserves the right to consider, determine, and select submitted films within the Noncompetition Program, including but not limited to the following sections:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Perspektif<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>This Program presents documentaries that highlight the latest issues across different parts of the world. Through a reflective and confrontational approach, the films in this Program seek to interpret the social, political, environmental, cultural, and humanitarian dynamics that are unfolding today.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spektrum<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>This Program welcomes creative works that challenge conventional boundaries within documentary practice through diverse visual approaches, narrative structures, artistic techniques, and storytelling methods.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lanskap<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>This Program explores various discourses present in and about Indonesia. This Program features films that document, reflect on, and critically examine the social, cultural, historical, political, and humanitarian dynamics of present-day Indonesia. Lanskap serves as a space for reading the complexities of Indonesian identity and experience.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Utopia\/Dystopia<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>This Program highlights the latest developments in feature-length documentaries across the globe. Films in this Program demonstrate how feature-length documentaries continue to evolve as a medium to examine reality, articulate artistic vision, and imagine possible directions for the future.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Docs Docs: Short!<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>This Program highlights the latest developments in short documentaries across the globe. Films in this Program demonstrate sharp ideas and agile responses to contemporary issues, while presenting short documentaries as a dynamic and relevant medium.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Is there a submission fee waiver?<\/h3>\n<p>If you are a filmmaker with Indonesian citizenship, FFD offers a submission fee waiver for the Film you submit. Please ensure that you select the appropriate Program category in order to get the submission fee waiver. The submission fee waiver for filmmakers with Indonesian citizenship applies only to the following submission categories: Indonesia Feature-Length Competition, Short Competition (Indonesian Filmmakers), Student Competition, and Noncompetition (Lanskap). Please note that the submission fee waiver applies only to one submission for each Film submitted.<\/p>\n<h3>Can I submit my film if it has already been publicly screened?<\/h3>\n<p>FFD does not accept submissions for Films that have had commercial public release in Indonesia or have been widely available on major OTT\/VOD platforms prior to the Festival. Films that have only been screened at festivals or limited online festival platforms remain eligible. However, if you have another significant version outside of those versions, we may consider the submitted Film.<\/p>\n<h3>Can I submit a film that has previously been submitted to FFD?<\/h3>\n<p>FFD does not accept submissions for Films that have been submitted to previous editions of the Festival.<\/p>\n<h3>Can I submit a work-in-progress film?<\/h3>\n<p>FFD only accepts submissions for Films that are completed or in their final form. Please note that once the submission process is completed, FFD will review the Film in the condition in which it was submitted. You may repeat the submission process if you wish to replace or update the Film. However, FFD cannot guarantee the verification of updated Film materials, as the selection process runs in parallel with the submission period.<\/p>\n<h3>Can I replace the version of the Film that I have already submitted?<\/h3>\n<p>When submitting your Film, please keep in mind that the selection process runs in parallel with the submission period. Your submission is considered final once it has been submitted. FFD does not accept replacement versions of Films that have already been submitted.<\/p>\n<h3>If my film contains English dialogue, do I still need to submit it with English subtitles?<\/h3>\n<p>For selection purposes, you are advised to embed English subtitles\/captions for Films that contain linguistic content and\/or spoken dialogue, regardless of language. Please ensure that all subtitles are hardcoded to your video file as opposed to including separate subtitles that need to be turned on in order to display on the screen, such as utilizing the \u201cCC\u201d option on your Vimeo or YouTube upload.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>If my film only contains minimal dialogue, do I still need to submit it with English subtitles?<\/h3>\n<p>Films containing linguistic content and\/or spoken dialogue, including without limitation English, must provide embedded English subtitles\/captions. We understand that text within a film is often an artistic choice by the filmmaker. You may submit Films that contain on-screen text as an artistic choice.<\/p>\n<h3>If my film contains a regional dialect\/language, do I need to include English subtitles?<\/h3>\n<p>You are encouraged to embed Indonesian and English subtitles\/captions if the film contains a regional dialect\/language. We understand that text within a film is often an artistic choice by the filmmaker. You may submit Films that contain on-screen text as an artistic choice.<\/p>\n<h3>Can I submit multiple films in the same year?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes. You are welcome to submit more than one Film, provided that each submission follows the established submission procedure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Selection and Notification<\/h2>\n<h3>When will I find out whether or not my film has been selected?<\/h3>\n<p>Official notification regarding the selection results will be announced no later than September 28, 2026. Please note that before the official announcement, the status on your FilmFreeway account will remain \u201cIn Consideration.\u201d This status does not indicate the final selection outcome.<\/p>\n<p>If there are urgent circumstances, such as an invitation to participate in another festival, please contact our Program team at program@ffd.or.id, and we will do our best to provide an earlier decision regarding your Film.<\/p>\n<h3>How will I be notified about the selection decisions?<\/h3>\n<p>Once a decision has been made by the Program team, the Applicant will be notified via email listed in the submission form. You are fully responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the contact information provided. FFD is not responsible for any failure caused by incorrect contact details.<\/p>\n<h3>Who selects my film?<\/h3>\n<p>All submitted Films will undergo a selection process conducted by the FFD Program team, consisting of individuals with diverse professional backgrounds and practices in film, arts, and culture. The selection process is conducted collectively through discussion and consideration, based on the vision and focus of each Program.<\/p>\n<h3>Can I appeal the selection decisions?<\/h3>\n<p>The selection decision is final and cannot be contested.<\/p>\n<h3>Can I transfer my film to another Program?<\/h3>\n<p>Once you have completed the submission, you will not be able to change the category of your film. Therefore, we strongly advise you to carefully read the Program descriptions and eligibility criteria before deciding on a category. However, FFD reserves the right to reassign a Film to another Program during the selection process if deemed appropriate.<\/p>\n<h3>If my film is not selected, can I receive feedback?<\/h3>\n<p>Please understand that FFD cannot provide individual explanations\/feedback regarding selection decisions, as the selection process involves detailed discussions based on multiple criteria. Further information regarding this matter can be found in the Rules and Regulations for Film Submission, specifically under\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ffd.or.id\/download\/FFD%202026%20Film%20Submission-Rules%20and%20Regulation.pdf\"><strong>General Terms and Conditions (8).<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Will FFD censor films that are screened at the Festival?<\/h3>\n<p>FFD does not apply censorship to Films screened within the Festival Program. As part of our responsibility to the audiences, FFD considers the context of screening venues, implements age classification, and provides content warnings for Films containing sensitive material.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Selected Films<\/h2>\n<h3>What should I do if my film is selected?<\/h3>\n<p>If your Film is selected, FFD will send an official invitation via email using the contact information listed in your submission form. You are encouraged to consider attending FFD 2026 as a Film Delegate. FFD will guide Film Delegates through the entire process before, during, and after the Festival, particularly regarding matters related to the selected Film.<\/p>\n<h3>What materials are required from selected films?<\/h3>\n<p>You must send Film\u2019s screening copy via a downloadable link. Selected Films will be promoted using the information provided in the submission form. Festival publications will feature Film original title, international title, trailer\/excerpt, production country, language, production company, Film contact, and director\u2019s and producer\u2019s photos and profiles. All publication texts related to the Film will be written by FFD.<\/p>\n<h3>What screening format is required?<\/h3>\n<p>Screening copies must be delivered in H.264 format of H.264; 1080p, Full HD, 2K, or maximum 4K resolution<\/p>\n<p>All Films will be screened in their original language with English subtitles, including films in English. Films must be delivered with English subtitles, either as a separate subtitle file or hardcoded subtitles. If subtitles are hardcoded, they must be placed within the active image area, not the black box. Please note that the image may be cropped up to 3% during projection depending on the projector position and venue configuration.<\/p>\n<p>FFD does not cover any costs related to the Film materials delivery<\/p>\n<h3>Can I send my file using a hard drive?<\/h3>\n<p>For technical and security reasons, we recommend sending Film materials via a downloadable link.<\/p>\n<h3>Can I schedule a screening test for my film?<\/h3>\n<p>Screening tests are only available for Films in the Competition Program, provided that you have confirmed the request beforehand. Screening tests will be conducted at least one day prior to the scheduled screening of your Film.<\/p>\n<h3>How will FFD screen my Film?<\/h3>\n<p>FFD has limited screening slots during the Festival. Therefore, screenings are organized efficiently by presenting short Films (\u226440 minutes) as part of compilation programs, while feature-length Films (&gt;40 minutes) will be screened individually. FFD has full authority to determine compilation composition and screening schedules based on curatorial and technical considerations.<\/p>\n<h3>Where will my film be publicly screened?<\/h3>\n<p>FFD does not hold screenings in conventional or commercial cinemas. Instead, screenings take place in alternative spaces specifically prepared for film screenings.
