Synopsis

Shortly before Indonesia’s presidential election in 2014, a Chinese filmmaker and her family fled to Malaysia to avoid possible riots. This was based on her mother’s painful memories of May 1998. The trip led to the story of her family’s struggle to survive for generations.

Ivonne Kani (b. 1992) is an Indonesian filmmaker and visual artist who works cross-media utilizing autoethnographic approaches. Through her artistic practice, Ivonne explores the construction of layered meanings that open up spaces for reinterpreting established perspectives. Ivonne is a participant of EFM DocToolbox 2025.
