Sensory Ethnography

As a basis of the idea of anthropology method, the recognition of sensory ethnographic practice then unravels the question of how these aesthetical experiments can create knowledge over reality? And as the outcome, how the interrelationship between ideas and practices is also the efforts to divide them?

This program shows footage of the intersection between audio-visual production and sensory ethnography approaches. In particular, various movie options in the program are produced collectively by anthropologists, Sensory Ethnography Lab, based at Harvard University, United States of America.

As a basis of the idea of anthropology method, the recognition of sensory ethnographic practice then unravels the question of how these aesthetical experiments can create knowledge over reality? And as the outcome, how the interrelationship between ideas and practices is also the efforts to divide them?

In its practice, the method of using this aesthetic possibility then seems to overlie with the making of documentary or even experimental film. Throughout a series of screenings, exhibitions, and discussions, this program wants to explore forms of alternative approaches in documentary filmmaking discourse.

Aside from the special attention to the selection of films, the effort to bring them in the format of the exhibition becomes quite different compared to screenings during the festival. This idea allows audiences to be able to feel certain stimulants with time and opportunities to re-watch those works comprehensively. Besides that, this program will also have a short discussion that problematizes the edicts for creating a sensory ethnographic transcript.
