Tracing Roots, Capturing Origins: A Self Portrait
This year, Forum Film Dokumenter broaden the scope of the program SchoolDoc through a workshop of film production for high school students, in an effort to create awareness on media usage in this era. This program is brought together in collaboration with the Institut Français d’Indonésie and DING Collective, supported by PusbangFilm, bringing the theme Tracing Roots, Capturing Origins: A Self Portrait.
SchoolDoc follows the participants as they journey questioning the important things in their lives, what defines them: wishes, dreams, and unanswered questions. From contemplations on the matter of family, it manifests in personal history reflecting identity, which is brought to be re-interpreted and revealed.
This process gives birth to five works, which are going to be exhibited during the event of Festival Film Dokumenter 2019 in form of installation. Within, the recording of the journey behind the making of the films is presented in contingent as a documentary interpretation.

The body holds an essential place in her works or during workshops. In 2011 she founded with Jean Paul Labro the collective of artists ”Ding”. Their projects are made in collaboration with other people, artists, researchers, architects in France and abroad.
The Projections of Five
This year, SchoolDoc organizes a film production workshop for highschool students, bringing the theme Tracing Roots, Capturing Origins: A Self Portrait. The workshop produces five creations from the participants. These creations are going to be screened in an installation exhibition during the Festival Film Dokumenter 2019. Within the exhibition, a recording of behind the scenes process during the workshops are projected alongside the five fictions. Featuring a title The Projections of Five, this exhibition is interpreted as a documentary piece, where fiction and picture behind the fiction are read in unity. The participants present themselves through stories captured as films. Accompanying it is the narration of self, imaginated within the universe of the works. For example the conditions–especially arising from family circle–behind these youths’ disquietudes. Or perhaps, what they imagine for the future. Entering this installation is like entering their world. We might sympathize, or we might question it. Flashes of the past or comparison between realities might have presented itself. However, honesty, and maybe a little bit of naivety, is an important element. It is a painting of one group’s dynamics, consisting of the adolescents, that treats film as their journal, a place where they can bring forth things unspoken. It might have been, far in the future, together with other recordings of their generation, a mark of an era.
