Focus on Canada

While the Canadian film industry is predominantly localized in Toronto and Montreal, British Columbia remains a hub for international film and television productions, in part due to enticing production tax credits. Yet, save occasional independent features, documentaries, and videos, projects rarely permit Vancouver or the province’s sylvan woodlands to represent themselves; instead the urban and rural spaces often (and occasionally clumsily) are offered as stand-ins for American locales.

Pacific Standard Time brings together historical and contemporary moving image works by West coast filmmakers and artists, with each piece responding to different questions of cinematic temporality and the geographic specificity of BC (and, in one case, Portland).
