5 Islands / 5 Villages

5 Islands / 5 Villages

5 Islands / 5 Villages is a project of short documentary filmmaking initiated by Goethe Institut with Pepe Danquart from Art University of Hamburg, für Bildende Künste Hamburg (HFBK Hamburg). This project is for the younger filmmakers in Germany and Indonesia to do an approach on topic such as periphery, distance and time with documentary film as its medium. At the invitation of Goethe-Institut in Indonesia, on February-March 2016, 5 students of HFBK Hamburg spent around three weeks intensively to do a close observation on the variety livings in five islands in Indonesia. On May 2017, after previously doing open calls for Indonesia documentary filmmakers, Goethe-Institut, HFBK Hamburg and Indocs, selected five Indonesia filmmakers to five different villages in Germany for around three weeks.

This project is done at remote areas, far from the hectic of big cities, and geographically those places are challenging because they are relatively difficult to access using usual transportation mode or so far they are beyond the reach of main mass media’s radar. The interaction between the filmmakers and those places produced various points of view in capturing the unique characteristic, character and life pulse in each place. The movies in 5 Islands / 5 villages captured the interaction between human, picture and senses as a panorama that presents harmony and diversity, and also chaos versus order.

As a cooperation program between Festival Film Dokumenter and Goethe-Isntitut Indonesia, 5 Villages, as the last part of project 5 Islands / 5 Villages, will be premiered in Festival Film Dokumenter 2017. This project would also hold a discussion with its initiator, Director of Goethe-Institut Indonesia, Dr. Heinrick Blömeke and Indonesia documentary filmmakers who participated in the program.
