Competition

For 14 years, Competition Program of Festival Film Dokumenter was designed as a medium of appreciation and award for national documentary films. The 15th edition of the Festival brings change. From the three categories present: Feature-Length Documentary, Short Documentary, and Student Documentary—a chance was opened for the first time for foreign documentary films to participate in the competition. With a total of 151 submissions: 53 submissions for Feature-Length category; 87 submissions for Short Documentary category; and 11 submissions of Student category—this year Competition Program is yet again holds the record for highest number applicants. The films submitted are highly varied and rich not only from the aspect of applicants’ demography, but also in its forms and contents, highlighting themes that are simple and close to our surrounding, to themes that speak of actual issues, not to mention issues that have been a source for neverending debates such as gender and sexuality. Through the festival’s internal curation, 22 official selections for Competition Program was made. With 7 films for Feature-Length Documentary category, 9 films for Short Documentary category, and 6 films for Student Documentary category. These films are noted for its successful effort in trying to capture ideas and problems in critical way, and then to translate it to the audiences.

John Badalu
John Badalu is one of the founder of Q! Film Festival (since 2002). He worked for Berlin Film Festival, Shanghai Film Festival, and Tallinn Black Night Film Festival. Used to be part-time lecturer in London School of Public Relations, John who got his degree in University of Bologna Dams also started his career as a producer and film publicitst. Part of The Heart (Paul Agusta, 2012); Vakansi yang Janggal dan Penyakit Lainnya (Yosep Anggi Noen, 2012); and What They Don’t Talk About When They Talk About Love (Mouly Surya, 2013)—are some of the films which he involved as a co-producer.

Lisabona Rahman
Lisabona Rahman paved her way to the film industry through writings and her involvement in film restoration projects. Beginning of 2002 she was active as a film journalist and a programmer, occupying the editor position in online media filmindonesia.com in 2010, and a manager of kineforum program of Dewan Kesenian Jakarta between 2006 to 2011. Graduated from Preservation and Presentation of the Moving Image Professional MA Programme in University of Amsterdam in 2013, Lisa then joined L’immagine Ritrovata as an operator in the Department of Film Comparison and Reconstruction in 2014. She also involved in the restoration project of an Indonesian’s classic Tiga Dara (1956).

Ranjan Palit
Ranjan Palit is a cinematographer/ filmmaker who has shot over a hundred documentaries, 20 feature-fiction films (including 7 Khoon Maaf, with Priyanka Chopra, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, one of India’s best directors) and around 300 TV commercials. He has directed 12 documentaries, and is making his first feature film called Orphan. He has won 4 national awards (of which he has returned 3) and half a dozen international awards. He has been an independent cinematographer for 30 years and directing for the last 25 years. Two of his documentary films won the Colden Conch Award in Mumbai Film Festival. In 1990 and 1996 he conducted masterclasses in Busan, Helsinki, Pune, Kolkata, Bangalore, Delhi, Austin, and Berkeley. He has been doing workshops in FTII, SRFTII, Whistling Woods International, Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology, etc., for the past 20 years.

Eric Sasono
A film critic, secretary of Board of Directors InDocs, member of International Honorary Advisor Asian Film Adwards 2009-2013, won Piala Citra 2005-2006 for film critic.

FX. Harsono
Is an Indonesian artist possessing a critical observation on politics and cultural movements in Indonesia, starting when he was but a student. FX. Harsono learned painting in STSRI “ASRI” Yogyakarta (1969-1974) and Institut Kesenian Jakarta (1987-1991). Since 2005 he was a lecturer in Fakultas Seni and Desain (Faculty of Art and Design) in Universitas Pelita Harapan, Tangerang. Several of his solo exhibitions were Testimonies (Singapore Art Museum, Singapore, 2010) and The Erased Time (Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Jakarta, 2009). FX. Harsono also appeared in many international art events, such as 45h Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, Moscow, Rusia (2011); Edge of Elsewhere in 4A, Sidney, Australia (2011); Recent Art From Indonesia: Contemporary Art-Turn in Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai, China (2010); and Beyond the Dutch di Centraal Museum, Utrect, Netherland (2009). Beside numerous exhibitions, FX. Harsono is a speaker for many workshops, and art crticic in several media. He also the founder and Board Chairman of Koalisi Seni Indonesia (Indonesian Art Coallition). In 2014, he received a Prince Claus Award.

Yosep Anggi Noen
A writer and a filmmaker, Anggie started his career with short films he produced with his friends in his study in Communication, Universitas Gajah Mada. Several of his short films include Hujan Tak Jadi Datang (2009), screened in International Film Festival Rotterdam. His first feature film, Vakansi yang Janggal dan Penyakit Lainnya (2012) was in a competition of Lacarno Film Festival, also won Special Mention Award in Vancaouver International Film Festival 2013. He also won Grand Prix Festival Film Short Shirt & Asia 2014 (SSFF) and Sonje Award Best Shrot Film in Busan International Film Festival 2013 with his film A Lady Caddy Who Never Saw a Hole-in-One (2013).

St. Kartono
A teacher of SMA Kolese De Britto, since 1991. Eearning his degrees in Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia (Language Study), in IKIP Sanata Dharma dan Pascasarjana Linguistik Terapan (Master in Linguistic), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta. Has published more than 500 articles in KOMPAS, Harian JOGJA, BERNAS, Kedaulatan Rakyat, Majalah BASIS, Solo Pos, Suara Pembaruan, and RadarJogja. Several of his books are: Menulis Bersama Murid (Pintal, 2015); Menadi Guru Untuk Muridku (Kanisius, 2011, 4th edition); Menulis Tanpa Rasa Takut (Impulse-Kanisius, 2009); and Sekolah Bukanlah Pasar (Buku KOMPAS, 2009).

B.W. Purba Negara
B.W. Purba Negara is a filmmaker from Yogyakarta who has been directing both documentaries and fictions alike. At first only been making short films, he is currently finishing and starting the distribution of his first feature film, Ziarah. Beside actively making films, B.W. Purba Negara also involved as a mentor in Eagle Awards Metro TV, and Jogja Film Academy, and previously also a lecturer in Universitas Multimedia Nusantara. His documentary works including Rantemas (2006), Panggung Kasetyan Balekambang (2005), Musafir (2008), and Digdaya Ing Bebaya (2014).

Thong Kay-Wee
One-part publicist and one-part film curator. Responsible for devising strategies to propagate the archive’s film collection and mission to save in Asian Film Archive (AFA) since 2014. Graduating from Communications study specializing in Broadcast and Cinema Studies, he is an independent creative who believes in the evocative and hypnotic power of the moving images.
