Asia in Memory
Asian Docs is a collaboration program of two festivals: Festival Film Dokumenter (FFD) & Jogja NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF). A program that visits Asia through various selected documentary films, from—as well as—with perspective of Asia. Asia in the discussion of course isn’t just about a geographical discourse upon an area. This notion on Asia born from a belief that each country is having and bringing their voices, occasions, and aesthetics, which is an implementation of Asian life in all of its elements: its people, community, culture, and different economic-politic-social situation—which cannot be measured under the same perimeter for one Asian country to another.
This year we have works trying to manage issues on ‘memory’, either on the personal level, social, even state. Memories of these many different things, aren’t limited to social problems in big narration clipped from important periods legitimize as a collective memory, but also ones capturing subtle, often missed, simplicities. This is the silver-lining in Asian Docs program this year. Through the documentary works, we hope for the audiences to be involved even deeper in the process of knowing and becoming Asia, which never stops ‘becoming’.
